The cyclists shouldn’t have apologized especially if they didn’t mean the apology...you know they were pressured to apologize.

Why are so many upset that the USA Cyclists were wearing mask when they got off the plane in china?

It was perceived the US team was insinuating the air pollution was SO BAD that it would make them sick and ruin their chances at a medal.
[Cyclists as a group have a very large lung capacity and they are able to use oxygen more efficiently than other athletes. Unfortunately, you can imagine what that means, they breathe deeply and utilize more air... so they probably inhale more pollutants if that's the environment they're stuck competing in.]
Apparently they hurt the feelings/pride of the chinese olympic organizers. The US cyclists made china ';look'; bad by acting as if their air was polluted...

Because it was an act to show that China had dirty air pollution. They were trying to breath clean air but while doing that they were unawhere that they were actually stating an insult to the country. I on the other don't really care because it does not affect me whatsoever and everyone just needs to get over it. Because China does have very bad air pollution they were just trying to breath in clean air.
I didn't see this in the news but I believe that some probably thought that the masks were rude because they meant to imply that the the air in China is bad or that they did not like the Chinese. The apology, I assume, was because the cyclists did not mean to send the message that they did not like the air in China or the Chinese people.
The chronic pollution in China is a large concern for many athletes since the pollution can cause respiratory problems. These 4 athletes chose to wear masks even though Olympic officials did not deem in necessary that day. Some people felt like the Olympians were making a statement about the mass production of pollution in China, which the Chinese government has invested much time and money to reduce.
Well I haven't been following anything to do with the Olympics and Bejing and I'm not going to...(sorry,matter of principle for me--my way of boycotting them!) but from what I've seen in fleeting news reports as I flip by newstations on TV, the newscasters all report with the city in the background and it's a haze of smog.
I wouldn't be surprised if all those people come back with damaged lungs from the experience. I sure hope everyone brought their own asthma puffers too--they are going to need them.
I don't know why they apologized. But ...I don't really know why they were wearing them. Are some of them from big smoggy cities..so they're probably used to smog if that is what they're trying to avoid? Probably...so it may have come across as rude. ALTHOUGH maybe they just didn't want to catch a cold on the plane?

No on should be upset about it...maybe the smog issue should have be thought about prior to awarding China the Olympics. I had co-workers just come back from Beijing and they said that their eyes and throats were burning from all the smog.

They shouldn't have apologized. Compared to China, our air is crystal clear. And I'll never go to China unless that changes.
Oh, other countries are just raging hungry for ANYTHING to be mad at the USA about. The air in Beijing is awful and I dont know i would breathe anything but oxygen in a tank!

I was just in China earlier this month, and its not that bad, but i guess to people who have never been there, it is.
Do you like your visitors come to your home and cover their nose and tell you that your house smell so bad and they also afraid it may cause their health problem? If I were you, I will tell those visitors that they are free to leave.
They were disrespecting china! the air quality is fine and safe. Before i get thumbs down i would like to say am against china and the horrible things they are doing to their people.

I don't know. The air in Beijing is worse than the famous LA smog from back in the 1960s.
Their trainers told them to because of all the smog in Beiing.
If the cyclists didn't apologize and make it look like the U.S. is the simpering wimps that they are, thanks to George Bush, the Chinese would call in all their loans. We wouldn't want that now, would we?
i dont know but they are individuals and can wear what they want i think~
