What is masking in sony vegas 8 Pro ?

What does it do ?

What can you do with it ?

Do i really need it if I just edit video game recordings ?What is masking in sony vegas 8 Pro ?
Masking is about transparency / opacity. This is used in multiple video track editors like Vegas.

- say a video file01 is placed in videotrack01 and video file02 is placed in videotrack02 directly on top. Without adjusting anything, you won't be able to see the other video. But if you adjust the opacity/ transparency of the video on top, it will allow the image of the other video to show - extremely to opacity = 0 will be like peeling off the video on top.

- this is used as an effect - like a camera trick, where a ghost is going off one's body or a controlled scene fade-in/fade-out unlike the straight-forward cross-dissolve transition

- try it first to see the effect w/ varying opacities, then judge for yourself whether have use for it.What is masking in sony vegas 8 Pro ?
The critical thing about masking is that it's selective - you can choose which bits of the picture are going to be masked. What you do with it is up to you, but try googling for ';Vegas';, ';mask'; and ';tutorial'; to get some ideas.
If you really want to get into compositing....Vegas is not really a great choice...it is extremely basic. Go with Adobe Premiere and/or Adobe AfterEffects.
